The biggest change going forward will be that independent contractors and self-employed residents will be eligible for unemployment, but they won’t be able to use the current form on the state’s unemployment site.
“Please wait. If you are an independent contractor or self-employed, please wait until this new form comes out,” Warner said.
That new form is coming, but Warner says there isn’t a set date for the rollout yet.
“You can’t apply for it right now. You have to wait for the state to create their system to take in those claims, because it’s brand new. It’s never been done before,” Warner said.
And here’s what could happen if you try to apply with the current form as a contractor or self-employed resident.
“You very well may delay getting benefits if you apply now,” Warner said.
In the meantime, Warner outlines some resources you can take advantage of if you need the money:
“Apply for a disaster loan, a state small business association loan,” Warner said. “There’s also a paycheck protection program. That will allow eight weeks of cash flow assistance through 100% federal guarantee loan to small businesses who maintain their payrolls.”
Warner said that paycheck protection program also applies to nonprofits.
If you’re having trouble signing up for unemployment, Warner says your state representative or senator may be able to help, so give them a call.
